Sully was worried about Ofelia.
Very worried.
Pascal and Tansey fled before the backup units arrived because nobody wanted to explain their presence on the roof. That left Ofelia to pace near the edge, and Sully to watch her as he ordered the responding parties to load up the body and gather evidence.
Their official story was that Bright mustâve done something to kill himself after he fled Joeyâs. They couldnât pretend they hadnât been in the bar. There were too many people who had seen them and watched them give chase. They had to stick as close to the actual story as possible. Sully didnât like that one bit. He wouldâve preferred to lie.
Thankfully, once Jack Dunham arrived on the scene, things got better.
âDetective Sully.â Dunhamâs gaze was flat as he took in the action. The coronerâs office was loading up the body. They wouldnât get an autopsy until the following day. âNice neighborhood you decided to visit.â
âOne of the prison bigwigs told me that our victim left Rowdies with some guy, and they mentioned coming to Joeyâs. We came here to see if our victim had visited. Corbin Bright was in the bar and acting squirrelly. As we were asking questions, he ran. We followed. He went to the roof. We trailed behind, being as safe as possible. We found him dead.â
Dunham nodded as he took it all in. âVery good. Now tell me what really happened,â he prodded in a low voice. It was obvious that he didnât want to risk anybody eavesdropping.
âIt basically happened exactly as I said, except we had Pascal and his date with us,â Sully replied blandly. âThe guy was acting weird and there was no missing him when he ran. We obviously followed. It was up here that things shifted.â
âIâm almost afraid to ask.â
Sully filled in his boss. Dunham was familiar with all the players. When he got to the part about the shadows ripping apart Brightâs soul, Dunham cringed. When it came time to relate Marieâs presence, however, Dunhamâs eyes practically bulged right out of his head.
âAre you kidding me right now?â he hissed, drawing closer to Sully. âYou have got to be kidding.â
âI am not kidding,â Sully assured him. âThey were on the ground looking up at us. They did not respond when we tried to talk to them, though.â
âMeaning ⦠what? Are you suggesting they were in some sort of trance? Like maybe they were being controlled by a spell.â
âOh, that would be great.â Sully bobbed his head. âI would love it if Marie was under a spell and not purposely doing this.â
Realization dawned on Dunham. âBecause Ofelia is struggling with her mother already.â He studied the witch in question, who was busily pacing back and forth. Ofelia appeared to be in her own little world. She wasnât interested in what the two law enforcement representatives were talking about. âWhat is she going to do?â
Sully didnât have an answer to that question. âI have no idea. Iâm afraid, though.â
âFor her, or of her?â
âMaybe a little of both.
